Ween Part Two: The Stallion

Let's Ride, Boy!

Now, it's time to get into The Pod. This is a capsule that will travel into the deep innerspace! The Boognish isn't here to guide us. We will have lots of food and rough self-talk, though.

The Pod

Ah sophomores! As Ween started to figure out who they are, they abandoned their avatar and found their nemesis. As the darkness descends, they do not lose the chuckles--or the cheese, if you please.

This album is way better than GWS, but there is less joy. The album is more creative and varied in sounds. However, it is still very raw in both thought and production, but the production is more experienced. As a result the psychedelia is more intense. Perhaps fucking with the stallion has made these boy grow up. But facing the demon is never like slaying a dragon. It's more like chasing one. And as you listen, you can see trails! I can certainly taste the waste! All the sweat is here dripping from the dark introspection of youth getting serious. But don't sweat it. There is much fun and cheese in these egg rolls.

Great songs:

Highlights

The best part of this album is the varied sounds and depth of thought that accompanies the usual Ween twisted joy and playfulness. The album is a dark tribute to the comfort and hilarity of late adolescent/early adult relationships and the tough navigation of real life. It reminds me of how I also felt at that age. Half the time, I was toiling with inner turmoil, and the other half, I was looking for good eats with bacon, egg, and cheese!

Over and over again, the songs hit with both sincerity and jocularity in the exact right mix to make you feel truly young. I appreciate the reminder that all that potential of being in your twenties is so healthily dosed with so much doubt and self-inflicted pain. Now come on ya piece of shit, ride that stallion!

Questions

I'm glad that the weasels are mostly gone because now there is a demon between the legs that demands to be ridden until the the dark sweat expiates the sins of youth. But where is Boognish to help us? And how can I ride the stallion and battle it at the same time? Will Ween be able to pull up from this emotional dive? Or will the pod dive further in an incipient spin?

Final Thoughts

I don't know if eating really good food with delicious cheese qualifies as positivity. If not, perhaps the best Ween has to offer is that even when you can almost only see the pain, you can still fall in love and realize you just got to stay in your sweaty mucus bed and decide that no, I really don't wish you was dead. You must not succumb! Just pass the pork roll egg and cheese, if you please, and further ourselves on!

What an awesome bunch of songs. Just beware, much like with Morrison and his desert killer stalking the darkness of his desolate waste, Ween will make us all face the stallion, mang! Inside, we must come hither and ride--S T A L L I O N.
